The world-renowned beauty and value of Tiffany glass lamps, vases, and windows are legendary. Few people know that the masterful pieces from the Tiffany's firm would not have been possible without Arthur Nash, developer of the now-priceless Favrile glass, and his son Leslie, director of the Tiffany Furnace's divisions of glassmaking, pottery, and enamel.

Behind the Scenes of Tiffany Glassmaking is occasioned by the unexpected appearance of a wealth of archival material about Louis Comfort Tiffany and his various business enterprises. Included within this material are a great many manuscripts from the pen of Leslie Hayden Nash, who was directly in charge of many of Tiffany's departments and who rose to the position of production manager. The most significant of these manuscripts is Nash's Tiffany Favrile Glass, the 193-page typescript for a book that was never published. In addition, there are many preliminary drafts for portions of his book, as well as additional stories and anecdotes in manuscript form. Then there is a large scrapbook that Nash kept while at Tiffany Furnaces; pasted into it are original drawings for enamels and lamps and clippings from contemporary magazines and catalogues, all profusely annotated by Nash. Other highlights include an important album with photographs of Tiffany's first glass vessels, and two albums devoted to Tiffany's ceramics. finally, there is a bewildering array of miscellaneous drawings, papers, and photographs. While much of this material comes from Leslie Nash's tenure, a sizable amount comes from the time of his father, Arthur John Nash, who was in charge of the glass division from the very start of Tiffany's Corona glassblowing plant in the early 1890s. Taken as a whole, these documents are of tremendous historic value. They shed light not only on Louis C. Tiffany's glass, pottery, and enameling departments, but also on many other aspects of his richly diverse career. Most importantly, they offer insight into the working relationship of Tiffany and two of his chief lieutenants.

Behind the Scenes of Tiffany Glassmaking is a NEW hard cover from St. Martins Press. It has a small remainder mark along the edge and very minor shelf wear. It's a stated first edition, published in 2001.
