The earliest vinyls were produced in the late 1940s and were styled as a bag with drawstrings. These were not widely popular and changed shape as the metal lunch boxes took off. When television produced a boom in heroes in the late 1950s, manufacturers started producing the square vinyl lunch boxes. Not only to draw upon the metal lunch boxes' success, but also to overcome metal's drawbacks. Vinyl wouldn't rust and was flexible enough to resist denting. The industry came full circle when zippered, purse-like vinyl brunch bags were introduced in the late 1960s.
