A Reference Guide to Miniature Makers Marks is simply a huge alphabetical compilation of mostly contemporary miniaturists marks. Yet it goes much beyond merely identifying the craftsman behind a piece. The book also provides a surprisingly lengthy biography, and often autobiography of each artisan. It is a rare reference that is also a pleasure to read just for its human voice.

From the biography of Lou Murter (deceased): "Lou started making miniatures by copying a rocker that we had in our home. It wasn't scale but it was so much fun that he made several more non-scale before finding out that there was such a thing as scale. Everybody liked them and told him that he should go into business. Charging for them was still very much against his grain, but kids getting ready to go to college helped change his mind about that, although he would always rather give them away."

In addition marks and biographies, each listing also provides a list of honors and recognitions. Honors list awards and honors, such as inclusion in a White House Exhibit. Recognition often refers to publications, typically magazines and newspapers, from which you can learn more about your artisan.
