Will Alsop is one of the most exciting British architects working today, responsible for such striking buildings as Le Grand Bleu in Marseilles, the Ferry Terminal in Hamburg and, most recently, the Sterling Prize-winning Peckham Library in south London.
This, the first of two volumes on Alsop's work, will examine not only his architecture, but also his distinctive creative process, His early training and teaching in art have profoundly marked his approach to architecture: very rare for an architect, his first development of a new project is through paintings, Yet Alsop sees architecture as a collective art involving the architect, the client and the community, not just as a form of personal artistic expression.
Beginning with Alsop's student days at the Architectural Association in London, the book traces the architects development through study abroad, competitions, collaborations with artists and follow architects, early projects and built works up to 1990. The book ends by looking at the early designs for the Hotel du Departement des Bouches-du-Rhone in Marseilles (Le Grand Bleu), the project that will open the second volume.
Created in close cooperation with Will Alsop, the book is lavishly illustrated with sketches, painting, plans, and photographs from Alsops own archives. The text by Kenneth Powell analyses the work and ideas, as well as providing a readable biographical context.
