Western European Illuminated Manuscripts presents a collection which was started during the French Revolution in the late 18th century by Peter Dubrowsky, a bibliophile who was able to purchase manuscripts, incunabula and books from France. It includes missals and sacred texts from the abbeys of Corbie and Saint-Germain-des Pres, and a magnificent series of royal and princely manuscripts, originally in the possession of Jean de Berry and Francs I. There are also Renaissance manuscripts from England, Italy, Germany, and Spain. The works embellished with illuminations include Bibles, books of hours, and other religious texts, as well as chronicles, herbals, and even works of fiction and poetry. Detailed annotations and explanations give the provenance of each work.
