In 1949, the Horolovar Company was founded by Mr. Charles Terwilliger. From its inception, the Horolovar Company dealt specifically with old and new 400-day clocks. The company also served as a repair station in the United States for several makers of 400-day clocks that had originally been purchased in U.S. Military Post Exchanges (PXs) operating all over the world. The 400-day clocks manufactured prior to the early 1950s were relatively poor time keepers due to the effects of temperature changes on the suspension springs. The Horolovar Company developed a new suspension spring material that essentially solved the time keeping problem and made these suspension spring materials available to clock repairers. Selecting the proper thickness of the new spring material for each clock was a difficult task usually requiring a period of trial and error. Recognizing a need for specific information regarding the proper thickness of the suspension spring, in 1953 Mr. Terwilliger published The Horolovar 400-Day Clock Suspension Spring Guide. The guide contained 101 back plate identification illustrations and provided the thickness of the Horolovar suspension sprig appropriate for these clocks. This information greatly simplified the work of the repair person.

Over the intervening years, the original suspension spring guide has come to be identified as the first edition of the Horolovar 400-Day Clock Repair Manual.. This reprinting of The Horolovar 400-Day Clock Suspension Spring Guide has been produced to commemorate the Golden Anniversary of the introduction of this important aid to repairers of 400-day clocks. This reprint reproduces the original Spring Guide exactly except for the front cover where a brief history has been added.
