This book and the traveling art exhibition it documents, focuses on the career of American artist Milford Zornes and provides select examples of the watercolor paintings he has produced. At this time (2008) he is 99 years old.
Milford first received acclaim as an artist in the 1930s as a key member of the California Group that pioneered the California Style of watercolor painting. This art movement was part of the larger American Scene and Regionalist art movements which were defined by a commitment to produce and promote American styles of art inspired by distinctly American subjects.
Milford Zornes: An American Artist is divided into two sections. The first is an illustrated catalog list of the watercolors available to be exhibited. Each individual exhibition will different depending on how many works can be shown in the available space.
Section one is divided into four parts. The first part features watercolors inspired by scenes in California. The second shows watercolors painted on location in Mexico. The third features watercolors produced in Utah. The forth presents watercolors painted while Milford was teaching watercolor workshops around the world.
Section two is an illustrated chronology documenting each year of Milford's life up to present. The paintings illustrated in this section are not part of the traveling exhibition. They are provided as a means of visually documenting the evolution of Milford's painting style and to illuminate the writing in the chronology.
The chronology itself goes into details regarding Milford's art career, which we hope will help people understand what was happening in his life when individual works of art were created. It also provides a glimpse into the long, interesting and productive life he has lived.
