Tran Duy Ly's American Clocks is a monumental work covering 3,184 clocks from nearly 30 manufacturers, including numerous handmade and early American manufactured clocks, all in 1,024 pages. The breadth of these volumes is striking as are the illustrations. Volume 1 covers 19 American manufacturers. A history of the company and prime examples of the product from each are presented. Volume 2 again examines the clocks from 19 American manufacturers, introducing some manufacturers that were not included in volume 1 and listing new clocks for manufacturers previously included. Volume 2 has a fascinating 110 page section on Self-Winding clocks. None of the 992 clocks presented in volume 2 are found in volume 1. Volume 3 is divided into two sections. The first is Clocks by Type and covers mostly handcrafted and early American clocks. The Clocks by Type section includes Beehive, Column & Cornice, Column & Splat, Cottage, Hollow Column, Mantle, Mirror, Ogee & Bevel, Pillar & Scroll, Steeple, Torsion Pendulum, and Wagon Spring Clocks. Clocks made by the Ball Watch Company and The Lux Manufacturing Company comprise the second section. The Lux section is a particularly impressive . It is enough to make into a separate book. Its 118 pages include Lux's popular "novelty" clocks as well as their more traditional time pieces. A history of both companies is also provided. Published in 1995, 2000 and 2002 with 2000 and 2002 Price Guides, these books are Tran Duy Ly's most current editions. All have a quality Smyth sewn binding with white gloss sheets.
